LinkedIn Targeting Is Precise. That Does Not Make It Qualified
LinkedIn Targeting Is Precise. That Does Not Make It Qualified

LinkedIn is one of the most commercially valuable advertising platforms available to South African B2B businesses. The ability to reach by job function, seniority, company size, industry, and specific professional attributes is genuinely powerful. There is nothing else in the market that offers the same precision for professional audience targeting.

And that precision creates a false sense of security.

Because precision in targeting is not the same as qualification. Reaching the right profile is not the same as reaching the right buyer. A senior decision-maker who sees your ad and clicks is not a qualified opportunity. They are an interested person in a demographic that matches your ideal customer profile.

Those are very different things.

LinkedIn's own documentation is clear that ads are served through an auction influenced by bid price and ad relevancy. That means you are not simply buying access to an audience. You are competing for attention inside it, and the cost of that attention is significant. LinkedIn CPCs and CPLs are among the highest across digital channels, which is a direct reflection of the audience quality.

When a business spends at those rates to generate a response, and then passes that response directly to sales with no qualification in between, it is asking its most expensive channel to also carry its weakest post-click process.

A job title is not intent. A company match is not urgency. A senior decision-maker asking a question in an inbox is not evidence that they are ready to engage commercially. They may be researching for a project six months away. They may be gathering information for a conversation they want to have later. They may be curious in a way that has no near-term commercial dimension at all.

None of that makes them a strong lead. It makes them someone who responded. And response is not readiness.

The fix is not different targeting. The targeting is often fine. The fix is a proper qualification layer that sits between the LinkedIn response and the sales team, and that can assess the specific commercial readiness of each person who engages.

When that layer exists, LinkedIn becomes even more powerful than it already is. Because you are no longer just reaching the right profile. You are identifying, within that profile, the people who are actually moving towards a decision.

Precision is where LinkedIn earns its cost. Qualification is where that cost becomes commercially justified.
