A new way of working at GAS, and why we built it ourselves
A new way of working at GAS, and why we built it ourselves

This week, the team at GAS Marketing put a new media data intelligence platform into production. It is called Media on GAS, and from now on every client account at GAS Marketing runs on it. We are sharing the story because we think how it was built says something important about where the industry is heading.

The problem we set out to solve

Most marketers still see their campaign performance once a month, in a slide deck, after the spend is already gone. By the time the numbers land, the chance to course-correct has passed. Dashboards that do exist tend to drown the operator in rows without telling them what to actually do. Gary Berman, Managing Director of GAS Marketing, calls this dashboard blindness.

"The job of media buying is decisions, not reports," he says. "A good report tells you what to do next in the time it takes to read it. Anything less is just paperwork."

How we built the solution

Media on GAS was built over nine weeks by Gary Berman the MD at GAS Marketing, in close collaboration with Claude, the AI system from Anthropic. The numbers from the build sit on the impressive side of any internal-tools benchmark:

  • 41,381 lines of code across 102 source files
  • 63 production API endpoints integrating live data from five different ad and analytics platforms
  • 1,163 ships in 60 calendar days, roughly one production release every twenty minutes of active development
  • 276 active development hours, with peak days running 62 commits in a single eleven-hour session
  • 30+ documented operator rules captured from real campaign incidents over years of agency experience

Industry teams building something of this scope from scratch generally allocate six to nine months and a small engineering function. The GAS build compressed it into nine weeks, with no outside engineers and no contractors.

Decades of hands-on agency experience guided every classification rule, every benchmark, every nuance about where the platforms quietly disagree with each other. Claude handled the speed of execution. Gary held the line on what the numbers had to mean.

"The new currency in AI is skills, not prompting," Gary says. "AI without expertise produces confident nonsense. AI with expertise produces leverage. The expertise is the moat."

Why we are not licensing it

We have had a few people ask if Media on GAS will be sold as a product. It will not. It is the operating system that runs GAS Marketing accounts. The platform encodes years of how we work, and the value to our clients is the work itself, not the tool.

"Most brands and agencies who want this kind of capability spend two quarters and a serious engineering budget building it," Gary says. "GAS clients get the output from day one. They do not have to fund the build, run the maintenance, or carry the senior expertise it takes to keep it honest."

What the platform actually does

Every morning at 08:15, Media on GAS scans every live campaign across Meta, TikTok and Google. If a CTR collapses, a spend spike emerges, a frequency cliff hits, or a follower campaign stops converting, the platform sends the account team a Daily Pulse with a corrective procedure already drafted, platform-aware and conservative. It will not assert a cause unless the data is unambiguous.

A few of the things now built into the standard GAS workflow:

Live multi-platform data pulled in real-time from Meta, TikTok, Google Ads and GA4

Ground Truth Audit that reconciles every headline number against each platform's own API and flags any drift.

Community Reach as its own KPI for clients running into their existing FB, Instagram or TikTok communities.

Per-client KPI profiles so the dashboard leads with what matters: KPI's are set by client objective.

Daily Pulse and Weekly Pulse emails with performance insights, branded per client

Client share links presents a clean read of where clients campaigns stand right now

What this means for you

If you are already a GAS client, you will start seeing your reports arriving sharper and faster. The data backing every recommendation will be live, not a week-old. When something needs attention, the account team will know before the day starts, not at month-end.

If you are thinking about your next agency partner, or looking at the in-house build versus partner question, the calculation has shifted. Real-time access to the metrics that matter is no longer a nice-to-have. It is the difference between catching a problem on day two and finding out on day thirty. Building it yourself is now a meaningful engineering commitment. Borrowing ours is a conversation.

"This is not a product we are trying to sell," Gary says. "It is how we are going to run your account. The team at GAS now has the tooling to match the standard of work we want to deliver, every day, on every flight."
